The National Historic Lookout Register is a international initiative sponsored by the American Resource Group -- a conservation service organization working nationwide in support of forestry. The Historic Places register is a government-sponsered listing with specific age criteria and requirements. Both have the objectives of protecting historic structures, but accomplish their mission in different ways.
Entirely through volunteers ranging from Ruritan Clubs to private foundations. The objectives of these groups are to help cash-strapped agencies maintain important structures in times of reduced funding. Recognition of the registry often leads to volunteer support through maintenance, conservation education, and staffing.
By completing 11 simple steps, including background information and an agreement to participate. About half of the nominations are made by personnel within the forestry agencies. The rest are nominated by interested individuals, very often members from the Forest Fire Lookout Association. When a lookout is nominated by a citizen or group, ARG will notify the agency/owner.
Yes, especially if safety is involved. It is encouraged to use appropriate materials when possible. The Federal register of historic places is more restrictive on modification.
Yes, a written request of the responsible agency. Although a de-listing has never been requested, salvage of the historic and educational aspects of the structure would be encouraged.
There is no charge for listing. A reduction of liability may in fact result due to the better maintenance and activity at the structure.
The Register provides no financial support directly, but listing often leads to volunteer maintenance and sometimes related fundraising.
