Mount Elwell was constructed circa 1915, a small observation cabin approximately 8x8 feet square. A 1914 article stated the structure would 'be made entirely of galvanized iron'.
Mount Elwell was replaced as a primary fire detection site in 1933/34 by a new lookout at Mills Peak. The structure was removed sometime later.
