Description

This lookout appears to have been a modified L-6 type 8'x8' wood cab with two window panes on each side atop a 20' battered, open timber tower. Ranger Peak along with a lookout at Barton Peak were built to replace the higher altitude Black Mountain Lookout in 1926. The lookout pair served until 1962 when they were replaced by a new structure at Black Mountain. The Ranger Peak cab was removed and stored at USFS Cranston Fire Station until 1963 when it was pressed into service at newly opened Keenwild Helitack Base. The cab became known as the "Helishack". The cab was enlarged and modified over time but was used until the opening of the new Keenwild Helitack Operations Center on June 9, 2010.
