Description

Built in 1931, this L-4 cabin with catwalk on concrete footings has been in ruins since 1961. Sculpted by glaciers 2 million years ago, Chateau Rock is a series of granite boulders stacked upon each other nearly 200 feet high, beginning with a colossal boulder at its base. Access to the lookout was to scramble over the rock until reaching a series of ladders for the last 80 feet. Notable visitors included a sow bear with cub, which a packer had to chase out of the cab with the help of his old trusty 22 and the notorious Ridgerunner of local fame.
