Description
This lookout began in 1923 as a camp lookout. A 50' pole tower with 7x7' cab was built in 1926, with a log cabin added for living quarters in 1928. In 1941, a 54' steel tower was built, with an L-4 cab added for living quarters in the 1940s. That steel tower was moved to Long Mountain Lookout in 1963, replaced by the present 67' treated timber tower with R-6 flat cab, which has not been staffed since the 1970s.
Spades Mountain was listed as US 908/ID 83 on the National Historic Lookout Register on July 9, 2011. The tower was removed by the U.S. Forest Service in July 2015.
