Description

This wooden tower, constructed by the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) from four 50’ creosoted poles and other creosoted lumber, was the first wooden fire tower in Kentucky. The poles came from Metropolis, IL and the other lumber was sawn from Kentenia State Forest in Harlan County, KY. Twenty-five to 30 spectators were on hand at the initial start of the build. Clarence Gray and Charles Butts of the KDF put a tin roof on the tower and used the tower up until it rotted. It was possibly cleared during road work on the Trace in the early to mid 1980s.
