The first wooden 6'x6' structure was built by the New Hampshire Forestry Commission in 1912. This was replaced by a stone base structure designed by Boston engineer Frederic H. Hay in 1928 and funded by summer residents of Dublin, NH. This structure was used as a fire lookout from 1928 to 1948, and was removed in 1972. Mount Monadnock is a National Natural Landmark.
