The lookout was erected in 1939 as a secondary lookout meaning it was only staffed after a lightning storm or during extremely dry weather. The Rapid City Journal left behind a brief description of the lookout site, "Go to Forest Road 238 which leads to the top of Castle Peak, the site of an abandoned fire lookout. The view from here reaches out into Wyoming to the West and takes in nearly the whole scope of the Hills. It is one of the finest vantage points to be found."
The lookout was demolished in 1961 and its remains scattered down the ridge and later burned.
