Partners and Associate organizations of the National Historic Lookout Register

There are many special interest groups concerned about lookouts around the country

Forest Fire Lookout Association
The FFLA is a collection of independent groups of individuals all interested in the common vision of the preservation of past and current lookouts and the histories associated thereto. The FFLA has chapters in 49 States and 10 countries where lookouts have been erected for the purpose of fire detection. There are currently over 2000 members world wide. The FFLA meet yearly to exchange ideas about preserving lookouts. The FFLA regularly sponsors projects involving the preservation of lookouts. The NHLR site is host to many FFLA related documents, find them here.
San Bernardino National Forest Association
This group successfully operates a series of lookouts northeast of L.A. in the summer months with volunteers. They have redefined the purpose and future for the lookouts in the area. Not only are the LO's used to watch for fire, they serve as interpretive centers for the occasional visitor. Because of the proximity to the LA population the sites and buildings are easily vandalized, the SBNFA has united the concerned citizens into a formidable organization. This "people caring for Their forest" organization will undoubtedly be the example for many other forests throughout the land.
Sand Mountain Society
A group of concerned individuals in North West Oregon. Their major contribution has been the restoration of many LO's in Region 6. The most notable is Sand Mountain, NHLR #001, which was reconstructed in 1989 by private money and labor and is mostly comprised of parts from the LO which was on Whisky Peak, Crater N.F. Sand Mountain is manned with live in volunteer lookouts throughout the summer months. The acting volunteer serves as lookout, caretaker and interpreter to the constant flow of visitors.
Buck Rock Foundation
The Buck Rock Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the tradition of forest fire lookouts and the heritage of fire detection Buck Rock, NHLR #284.
Nature of the Northwest
A virtual information center for, and partner of the Forests of the Pacific Northwest. They have web pages describing lookouts and cabins which are rentable.
World Forestry Center
The World Forestry Center is a non-profit educational institution founded in Portland, Oregon in 1966.
Passport In Time is a USFS Archeology and History volunteering program which places qualified volunteers in exciting short term field jobs. The projects range from digging for evidence of ancient inhabitation to restoring 50 year old lookouts.
The Forest history Society links the past to the future by identifying, collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating information on the history of interactions between people, forests, and their related resources
Since 1981, the National Forestry Network has been getting these landowners together with consulting foresters.

The private and government agencies who have concern with or jurisdiction over Lookouts

American Resources
National Woodlands
A nationwide conservation service organization which represents 100,000 small woodland owners. American Resources also provides communications about the current issues confronting the small woodland owner via their quarterly, the National Woodlands magazine. American Resources maintains the NHLR and acts as the clearing house for listing requests.
National Register of Historic Places
Many lookouts have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, a branch of the National Park Service. It is the best way to insure the preservation of a building, however the restrictions for placement on the NRHP are more stringent then the NHLR.
United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service
The "Forest Service", the original owners of a substantial number of lookouts.
National Park Service
The National Park Service aggressively preserves and displays historic artifacts found within the park boundaries. Many of the lookouts on this list are NPS lookouts.
Bureau of Land Management
Owns and operates a "few" lookouts on public domain federal land..
State forestry and natural resource departments
Too many to list here, each owns and operates Lookouts registered on this list.
