Current Projects of the National Historic Lookout Register

The current projects relating to the NHLR are:

This website	Started October 1998. Rob Hoeye of IamWho Panoramic Imaging agreed to prototype a website for the NHLR after meeting Keith Argow, PhD, President of the American Resources Group and executive director of the FFLA at the annual western regional conference of the FFLA held in Big Bear, CA., in the San Bernardino National Forest, early October 1998. Many questions still need to be answered about this web site, mainly the level of flashiness versus the utility and the storage requirements. Other concerns include selection of search tags and search engine registration which expose the site to the greatest number of guests for the minimum of cost. This is the result of that work. New listings	Adding lookouts to the registry is the main objective of the NHLR. It is an ongoing project involving many volunteer hours per week.
Archiving the list	The list will be placed in a form which is safe from local catastrophe.
Engraved Placards	The NHLR is currently seeking a source for donated, engraved brass placards of each certificate. These placards will be placed at the site of each registered lookout.
Replication of Fire Finders	One of the most coveted artifacts associated with the lookouts is a "fire finder". It is used to determine the azimuth of the suspect smoke from the lookout. The supply of finders has diminished due to loss, damage and misplacement. The USFS, FFLA and NHLR are actively seeking a source for genuine or high grade replicas of the classic "Osborne Fire Finder".
Passports	Lookout Passports are being developed and will be on sale soon. Each registered lookout will have a unique rubber ink stamp, which can be used to imprint your passport and authenticate your visit.
